PERSONAL PORTRAIT

One of our seminar activities was to bring in an image of our personal style and get a peer to describe it (I used the images listed below). Karolina described the outfit I was wearing that day (dark skinny jeans, sheer oversized jumper and patent brown loafers) as 'dark girly grunge'. I described hers (black skirt, black jumper and black tights) as 'sophisticated, minimal and girly'.

I tend to wear a lot of dark colours and I like a mix of fabrics. If I were to sum up my personal style I would describe it as laidback & girly with an element of tough girl grunge. I found it interesting that Karolina also picked up on some of these elements.

LONDON TRIP

We got to go on a trip to London as a chance to conduct some primary research for our chosen brand for project 2. Myself, Georgia, Whitley, Alice and Courtney had chosen Jack Wills as our brand and our first point of call whilst in London was to Selfridges were there is a JW concession alongside some of their competitors such as Ralph Lauren. We managed to take some pictures.

We also visited the Burberry store to see the new technology for first hand. This new instore technology basically consists of a gigantic screen that resembles a mirror where you can hold the tag to it and it shows you the item on the catwalk or what else it would go with. This inspired us to think about something similar for Jack Wills however that idea was scratched I think on the tube back as we decided that perhaps Jack Wills would benefit better from something that appeals more to their target demographic: university students.

THE EYE HAS TO TRAVEL

DIANNA VREELAND - THE EYE HAS TO TRAVEL

We watched the Dianna Vreeland documentary in a lecture. Vreeland seemed to be a little bit barmy, very creative and with a keen eye for detail. She was a noted columnist and editor who worked for Vogue and Harper's Baazar. My favourite quote from the film is the one below:

DOC MARTENS MOOD BOARD

For the initial moodboard brief I chose the brand Dr. Martens. Dr. Martens originated from Germany during the war (1945). Dr. Märtens created the original boot because he wanted a soft leather boot with cushioned soles to support his injured ankle. An old university friend helped Dr Märtens to sell the boots and by 1959 the pair were looking to expand internationally and British shoe manufacturer R. Griggs Group Ltd. bought patent rights to manufacture the shoes in the United Kingdom, Griggs changed the brand name to Dr. Martens, added the trademark yellow stitching and added a trademark to the AirWair soles.

DM's are often associated with British sub-cultures such as punks, new-wave, skinheads and with the grunge scene during the nineties. Therefore I sought out images that represented such sub-cultures such as the brick walls, close-up of customised denim and plaid / tartan print.

FINAL MOOD BOARD

I chose to rip the images to create a rough texture which I think suits the brand image (carefree, reckless). I also used some B&W images of the punk, skin-head and new-wave scene to represent the history of DM's.

I included the text 'tough love' because DM's are noted for their durability and wear which is quite often a selling point for the consumer to buy from the brand.
